George bracket: 1924 New York Yankees defeat 2019 San Francisco Giants in seven games

One team had Babe Ruth. The other did not. The Bambino hammered five homers -- equalling by himself the Giants' team output -- as the Yankees became the rare 1924 squad to outhomer a 21st century opponent.

Game One: Giants 5, Yankees 3: Both starting pitchers (Herb Pennock for the Yankees, Madison Bumgarner for the Giants) hit better than they pitched. Each homered, Bumgarner with a man on. Evan Longoria also hit a two-run homer, while Ruth had a solo shot.

Game Two: Giants 5, Yankees 4  The Giants scored three runs in the eighth, chasing Waite Hoyt and overcoming a 3-2 Yankees lead. Buster Posey went 4-for-4 for the homestanding Giants with a pair of doubles.

Game Three: Yankees 4, Giants 3: Bullet Joe Bush went the distance with a six hitter.  Pedro Sandoval led off the Giants' sixth with a homer, after which Bush allowed just one baserunner. Ruth hit a two-run homer in the first and the Giants trailed from then on.

Game Four: Yankees 4, Giants 3: In a pivotal managerial move, Pennock relieved in the eighth inning and finished Bob Shawkey's start as the Yankees evened the series. Joe Dugan hit a three-run homer in the third inning to put New York on top for the duration of the game.

Game Five: Yankees 4, Giants 0: Sad Sam Jones got the ball in the wake of Pennock's relief outing and spun a seven-hit shutout -- and hit the third pitcher's homer of the series, a solo shot of Bumgarner in the sixth inning. Dugan went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs

Game Six: Giants 7, Yankees 3: Hoyt was shelled for seven runs and 10 hits in three-plus innings as the Giants forced a seventh game. Brandon Belt scored twice and drove in a pair. Jeff Samandzjia allowed two runs in seven innings for the win.

Game Seven: Yankees 8, Giants 5: Bob Meusel hit a pair of two-run homers, including a tie-breaking shot in the ninth inning off Will Smith. Bush labored through eight innings, allowing nine hits and eight walks but stranding 12 baserunners. Milt Gaston threw a perfect ninth with Pennock standing by to nail down the game and the series.

Projected rotation: Pennock-Shawkey-Hoyt-Pennock-(Bush)-(Shawkey)-(Hoyt?). Gaston should not pitch more than one inning in Game One.
