Series 3: Flashes sweep Rams

Fordham pounded Raymond's pitching staff for eight homers and 23 runs in the three-game series.

Hugh McQuillan went eight innings in the opener, scattering eight hits. Earl Whitehill was in and out of trouble in five innings, during which he allowed two runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit batter. Once he left for a pinch hitter, however, the Flashes erupted for five runs in the sixth, including a three-run homer by Jim Bottomley.

The second game was the closest of the three, The Flashes got three solo homers in the first four inning off Gaylord Perry, including a pair of back-to-back shots by Highpockets Kelly and Hank Gowdy in the fourth. Joe Sewell put the Rams in front 5-3 with a three-run double in the bottom f the fourth, but the Flashes retaliated for three runs in the sixth, with Fred Lindstrom capping the inning with a triple. Jack Bentley and Rosy Ryan combined for four innings of one-run relief. Sewell had four RBIs for the game.

The third game was another Fordham rout. Bottomley and Chick Hafey hit back-to-back homers off Red Ruffing in the first inning, and Kelly hit a two-run homer in the eighth. Raymond didn't score off Burleigh Grimes until the ninth; the spitballer went the distance, allowing seven hits and one walk. Bottomley scored three runs and Kelly drove in three for the winners.

Pitcher availability: The Rams' Syl Johnson pitched three innings in the final two games and should sit the next one out. The Flashes' bullpen is rested.
