Red Faber threw a five-hitter for Guilford in the opener to outduel Dixie Davis. Hank Greenberg homered in the first inning for the Quakers, who got their other run on a triple by Joe Tinker, which scored Rick Ferrell.

Game Two rode a see-saw. Ortonville scored five runs in the second inning off Vic Keen, highlighted by Richie Ashburn's two-run double. It was 6-3 Orators going into the bottom of the seventh, when the Quakers scored five runs, the final three on Tony Perez' first homer of the season. That gave Guilford an 8-6 lead. Kiki Cuyler got one back with a homer in the top of the eighth, and the Orators scored five runs off Sheriff Blake in the ninth on five singles and two walks.

Don Sutton gave the Orators seven innings of two-run ball for his first victory. Jim O'Roarke hit a two run homer off Wheeler in the seventh, and Dave Danforth worked through the long-ball happy middle of the Quakers order in the ninth for the save.

Neither starter in the finale pitched well. Ted Lyons gave up six runs in two innings for the Quakers, but Fergie Jenkins was tagged for 12 runs in three innings. Keen threw seven scoreless innings in relief of Lyons for the win; he allowed just one hit. Elam Vangilder tossed five shutout innings for the Orators. Dan Brouthers hit a grand slam for Ortonville and also had a double and scored twice. Perez had six RBIs for the Quakers, and Tinker contributed three doubles. Max Carey, Johnny Evers, Larry Doby and Perez each scored twice for Gulford.

Pitcher availability: Vangilder has been demoted and George Lyons called up. Keen cannot pitch for five games.

Projected rotations: For the Quakers, Faber-Kaufmann-Jacobs-Lyons-Faber-Aldridge. For the Orators, Shocker-Davis-Sutton-Jenkins-Wingard-Shocker.
