The Braves made quick work of this battle for the beer and cheese, outscoring the Brewers 23-12 over the five games. Joe Adcock by himself hit as many homers as the entire Brewers team.

Warren Spahn went the distance in the opener, played in 1961's County Stadium. Domingo Santana homered in the first for the Brew Crew, but Adcock hit a two-run homer off Kyle Davies in the fourth, and that concluded the scoring. Spahn allowed four hits and one walk.

The Brewers won the second game in extra innings, with pinch-hitter Eric Sogard leading off the top of the 10th with a base hit and eventually scoring on Travis Shaw's fly ball. The Brewers got four scoreless innings from relievers Jared Hughes, Josh Hader and Corey Knebel after Matt Garza went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Lew Burdette went nine innings for the Braves and allowed the tying homer to Santana in the eighth.

The series moved forward 56 years and a few hundred feet east to Miller Park for Game Three. The Braves started Bob Buhl, but hit for him after four innings. Pinch-hitter Mack Jones delivered a two-run, game-tying double, and Tony Cloninger and Bob Hendley followed with two scoreless innings apiece. Meanwhile. Joe Adcock hit three homers to give the Braves a 9-3 lead. The Brewers plated three runs off Claude Raymond and Moe Drabowsky before Don McMahon entered with two on and two outs in the ninth to get the final out.

Hank Aaron and Lee Maye hit homers in Game Four, and Carl Willey went six innings for the win. Don Nottebart allowed one hit in three innings for the save.

Spahn wrapped up the series with another complete game in Game Five, allowing an unearned run on four hits and three walks. Joe Torre's three-run homer in the seventh provided plenty of breathing room.

The home team won only once in the seven games, but that was enough to pull the Diamondbacks through to the third round.

Camilo Pascual outdueled Zack Greinke in the opener at Chase Field. The Twins' curveball specialist didn't allow a baserunner until a fifth-inning walk or a hit until Greinke himself doubled in the sixth. Billy Martin's three-run homer in the eighth off the Snakes' third reliever of the inning gave the Twins a 6-0 lead, which was sharply reduced in the ninth by Chris Owings' three-run shot.

Jack Kralick not only worked seven innings for the win in Game Two, he cracked a solo homer in the second. Harmon Killebrew homered in the first to give the Twins a 3-0 lead. Kralick allowed three earned runs.

The series moved to 1961 and Metropolitian Stadium, and the D'backs got their first win behind Taijuan Walker. He allowed two runs in seven innings. Jake Lamb homered twice off loser Pedro Ramos.

Arizona took advantage of Minnesota's shoddy glove work in Game Four. Two of the Snakes' three runs off Jim Kaat were unearned, and the defensive problems went beyond the three errors to catchable balls not reached. Don Mincher homered off Zack Godley for Minnesota's only tally.

Greinke allowed hits to the first two Twins batters, but A.J. Pollock gunned down Lenny Green at the plate for the first out, and the Twins got just one more hit the rest of the way. Greinke walked five and struck out eight, seven of them in the final three innings. Brandon Drury doubled, singled and homered in four at-bats.

The series returned to Arizona, and the Twins pummeled Patrick Corbin for seven runs in five innings, highlighted by Earl Battey's two-run homer in a four-run fifth. Three of the runs were unearned. Kralick allowed one run on six hits in eight innings for the win.

The climatic Game Seven lived up to its billing. Arizona led 3-0 after three and 4-1 after four, but Jim Lemon homered in the sixth and Bob Allison brought home another run with a seventh-inning sac fly. The Twins got two hits in the ninth off Fernando Rodney, but Jeff Mathis threw out Green trying to steal second, and Rodney struck out Allison to end the game and the series.

Arizona's bullpen has no restrictions going into the third round.

The Browns won every game in which the Yankees failed to hit a homer. Unfortunately for St. Louis, that only happened three times in the series.

Game One turned into a Yankee rout late. Elston Howard homered in the fourth to give the home team a 2-0 lead and drove in another run in the sixth. After the Browns broke through in the top of the seventh to make it 3-1, however, the Browns bullpen surrendered two more two-run homers, to Roger Maris and Bill Skowron.

The Browns evened the series with a three-run outburst in the eighth against Rollie Sheldon and Luis Arroyo, Hack Severeid had a crucial triple in the middle of the inning. Urban Shocker made a one-batter appearance in the ninth with two on and two out to get the save. Winner Ernie Wingard allowed three earned runs in seven innings on five hits and five walks.

The series shifted to 1924 and Sportsman's Park in St. Louis for Game Three. Ken Williams drove in four runs on a triple and homer, and each of the first four hitters in the Browns lineup scored at least twice. Dixie Davis allowed three hits in 6.1 innings for the win.

The bats were silent in Game Four. Shocker pitched all 11 innings for the Browns and was victimized by Tony Kubek's two-out homer in the final frame. Bud Daley threw seven scoreless innings for the Yankees, followed by three more by Jim Coates, who got credit for the win. Shocker allowed six hits and one walk.

The Browns left home with the series lead after piecing together a stout game from bullpen parts. Bill Baynes (four innings), George Grant (one), Hub Pruett (2), George Lyons (0.1) and Danforth (1.6) combined for a seven hitter. The Browns scored three runs in the seventh off Whitey Ford and Sheldon, with Jack Tobin driving in a pair.

Back in 1961's Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers took control in Game Six. The Browns scored a pair of unearned runs in the second after a Skowron error to take an early lead, but that was not only the last lead the Browns would hold in the series, it was the last runs they would tally. The Yankees got a pair of homers from Maris, plus longballs from Skowron and Johnny Blanchard, and won 9-2.

Game Seven was over early. Yogi Berra hit a three-run homer off Davis in the first inning; Maris hit a three-run homer off Elam Vangilder in the second. Bill Stafford went the distance for the win, allowing just two singles and one walk.

The series opened with a slug fest, but the pitchers dominated the rest of the way, and Dazzy Vance dazzled again.

The Giants opened the series in Ebbets Field by lambasting Burleigh Grimes for 10 runs in three-plus innings, three of them unearned. Every one of San Francisco's starters scored at least once, and Orlando Cepeda scored three times. The Giants picked up 19 hits, including four doubles, one triple and one homer. Tommy Griffith scored three times for Brooklyn. Winner Jack Sanford was pulled after three of the first four men in the seventh to reach.

The Robins even the series behind a strong start from Dutch Ruether, who didn't allow a hit until Jose Pagan tripled to open the sixth inning (and advanced no further). Bill Doak entered in the ninth with two on, a run in and no outs and escaped the jam.

The series shifted to San Francisco and Candlestick Park for the next three games. Willie Mays homered in Game Three's first inning, but Vance allowed just one other hit in his complete game win. The Robins got seven hits off Juan Marichal and converted the two extra base hits -- a double by Griffith and a triple by Zach Wheat -- into runs.

The Giants went early long ball again in Game Four, with Willie McCovey and Orlando Cepeda hitting back-to-back homers in the first off Grimes. But as with Vance in the previous game, Old Stubblebeard kept the Giants off the scoreboard the rest of the way, scattering five hits in the next eight innings. The Robins scored a run off Toothpick Sam Jones in the seventh to chase him, then peppered Billy Loes for two runs on four hits in the eighth to take the lead, which Grimes held onto despite Ed Bailey's leadoff double in the ninth.

Sanford got the ball facing elimination in Game Five and came though for the Giants despite surrendering a homer to Jack Fournier. HarveyKuenn walked twice, stole a base off Bill Doak and scored twice, the second time on Mays' tie-breaking homer. Stu Miller gave up a ninth-inning homer to Fournier but no further damage and got the save.

That sent the series back to Brooklyn for Game Six. Vance threw the Robins' fourth straight complete game. He wasn't as overwhelming as in his Game Two two-hitter, but the Giants couldn't score on him despite loading the bases in the first and getting a pair of doubles from Mays. Brooklyn scored single runs in four separate innings off Mike McCormick.

The Cubs won three competitve games, few more competitve than the 16-inning Game Six. The Braves won the easy ones, few more one-sided than Game Seven.

Game One, in Wrigley Field, was a duel between two star southpaws. Anthony Rizzo's two-run homer in the first off Warren Spahn gave the Cubs a lead they would never relinquish. Winner Jon Lester threw six scoreless innings before giving way to a pinch-hitter. The Braves were held to just three hits by four Cubs pitchers.

The Braves evened the series in Game Two. They scored three runs in the second off Jake Arrieta on three singles and two walks, scored again in the fifth on Lee Maye's homer and added a tally in the eighth. Lew Burdette went 7.2 innings for the win, allowing three runs on six hits, two of them homers.

The series shifted to 1961 and County Stadium, and Bob Buhl's wildness cost Milwaukee. He walked eight in 2.1 innings, including four in a row in the Cubs' four run third. The Braves bullpen shut down the Cubs after that, but John Lackey held the Braves to three runs in six innings and the Cubs bullpen also threw goose eggs the rest of the way. Joe Adcock drove in all three Milwaukee runs with a homer and a double.

Eddie Mathews homered twice in Game Four to back up Carl Willey's six innings of five-hit ball. Jason Heyward hit a three-run homer for Chicago in the second inning, but the Cubs couldn't score after that. Mathews drove in four runs, and Hank Aaron had three singles, scored twice and drove in a run. Don Nottebart got Javy Baez to ground out with the bases loaded in the ninth for a one-out save.

Spahn gave Milwaukee its first lead of the series with a four-hit shutout in Game Five. He walked three and struck out four, and had two hits himself, a double and an RBI single. Frank Bolling tripled and doubled for the Braves, scoring twice.

Game Six, back in Chicago, was a classic. Arrieta held the Braves hitless until the fifth inning and scoreless until the seventh, when McMillian singled with one out and Lew Burdette walked. Justin Wilson relieved and retired pinch-hitter Gino Cimoli, but Aaron singled in McMillian for the lead. Burdette carried that 1-0 lead into the ninth, when Kyle Schwarber led off with a homer. Burdette left for a pinch-hitter after that inning, and Nottebart threw five scoreless innings, allwoing seven baserunners but getting two double play grounders. The Cubs ran through seven relievers, with Mike Montgomery working the final three innings. Claude Raymond worked a scoreless bottom of the 15th for the Braves, but Willson Contreras led off the 16th with a homer.

Game Seven was an anti-climax after that drama. Lee Maye led off the game with homer off Lackey,
and a rare error by Anthony Rizzo with two outs and the bases loaded in the third not only allowed a second Braves run to score but set up a grand slam by the next hitter, Frank Thomas. Milwaukee got homers from Aaron, Adcock and Joe Torre as the game progressed, and Buhl held the Cubs scoreless until the sixth, when his own error set up Heyward's bases-loaded triple. Bob Hendley relieved Buhl to start the seventh and worked three innings to get credit for the save.
