Steve Renko threw a five-hitter and Mike Jorgensen and Ron Fairly had RBI doubles for the Expos. Wayne Twitchell took the loss; he allowed two runs in seven innings on five hits and seven walks. He also struck out seven.

New York 11, Atlanta 8
Wayne Garrett homered twice, both solo shots, and scored three times in the slugfest. Cleon Jones also homered for the Mets, who totaled 14 hits and benefited from three Atlanta errors and assorted other misplays. Darrell Evans homered twice for Atlanta and drove in five runs. George Stone allowed six runs in six innings and was still credited with the win. Tug McGraw threw two scoreless frames for the save. Gary Gentry took the loss; he allowed eight runs in five innings, three of them unearned.

Pittsburgh 11, St. Louis 3
Willie Stargell homered twice and Vic Davalillo pinch-hit a grand slam as the Pirates bombarded Reggie Cleveland. Al Oliver also homered for Pittsburgh, the second of back-to-back jacks with Stargell.  Nellie Briles went six innings for the win, allowing one run on four hits, and Steve Blass worked the final three innings for the save despite allowing two runs in the ninth. Dal Maxvill is out for Sunday's doubleheader with an injury.

Houston 11, Chicago 7
The Astros scored four unearned runs in the first inning with the aid of errors by Billy Williams and Jim Hickman, broke a 4-4 tie in the fourth when Cesar Cedeno and Jim Wynn hit consecutive homers, broke a 6-6 tie in the seventh on a Lee May homer, then put the game away with four runs in the eighth inning. Jerry Reuss allowed six runs on nine hits in seven innings and got credit for the win. Burt Hooton was charged with the loss. Rick Monday hit a three-run homer for the Cubs, and Don Kessinger doubled twice and scored both times. Johnny Edwards was injured for the Astros and must sit the next two days, including Sunday's doubleheader.

Ken Forsch threw a two-hitter and retired the final 13 hitters he faced, while Tommy Helms homered among his four hits and Johnny Edwards drove in three runs. The Astros drove Rick Reuschel from the mound with six runs in the fifth inning, and added six more in the sixth. Cesar Cedeno homered and doubled for Houston, which totaled 19 hits. After the game the Cubs activated Bill Bonham and demoted Rico Carty, who is eligible to return May 13.

Montreal 6, Philadelphia 4
Hal Breeden hit a three-run homer in the first inning off Steve Carlton, and Ken Singleton matched it in the eighth to power the Expos to the win. Ernie McAnally went seven innings, allowing four runs (all in the second inning) on seven hits while striking out eight, but the win went to Bill Stoneman, who threw a perfect eighth before Singleton's blast. Mike Marshall picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.

New York 6, Atlanta 4
Wayne Garrett homered and scored three times and Felix Millan went 5-for-5 with two doubles for the Mets. Cleon Jones doubled in two runs in a three-run eighth. Ralph Garr went 5-for-5 for the Braves, with two steals and a pair of runs. Harry Parker got nine outs in relief for the win, and Phil Niekro took the loss. Henry Aaron must sit Saturday with an injury.

St. Louis 3, Pittsburgh 1
Rick Wise took a shutout into the ninth inning and Luis Melendez backed him with a solo homer and RBI single. Wise allowed seven hits in 8.1 innings, but after Willie Stargell homered and Richie Zisk singles, Rich Folkers came on to pick up his second save in as many days. Jim Rooker allowed two earned runs in eight innings for the loss. After the game, Mike Tyson was reactived off the disabled list and Mick Kelleher deactivated. Kelleher is eligible to return May 13.

Don Kessinger singled home pinch-runner Gene Hiser in the bottom of the ninth to break the tie and make the Cubs the first team in the league to reach 10 wins. Jim Hickman homered for Chicago, Lee May for Houston. Fergie Jenkins went the distance for the win, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Cecil Upshaw took the loss.

Philadelphia 7, Montreal 0
Ken Brett held the Expos to three singles, and Mike Anderson drove in four runs and scored three times himself. Brett walked three, hit one and struck out six in his complete game. Anderson hit a three-run homer in the third inning off loser Balor Moore and also doubled, singled and walked. Cesar Tovar tripled twice for the Phillies. Willie Montanez must sit the next game for Phillies, and Greg Luzinski is out until May 5.

Atlanta 5, New York 4
Marty Perez hit a three-run homer in the seventh and pinch-hitter Dick Dietz had the game-winning single in the ninth. Tom House entered in the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs and allowed just oen run to score, then threw a scoreless ninth to earn the win. Tug McGraw didn't retire a man in the ninth and was charged with the loss. Wayne Garrett homered, doubled, singled, scored a base and drove in three runs for the Mets.

St. Louis 5, Pittsburgh 4
Bob Gibson struck out 11 men in seven innings for the Cardinals. He allowed three runs on eight hits. Bernie Carbo had four hits and drove in two runs. Willie Stargell homered for Pittsburgh. Dock Ellis took the loss, and Rich Folkers got the save.

The Cubs scored three runs off a weary Bob Moose in the eighth inning, with pinch-hitter Rico Carty getting a two-run double and Gene Hiser, playing center in the absence of Rick Monday, drove in the other run with a single. Willie Stargell and Richie Zisk each hit solo homers for the Pirates on a raw day at Wrigley Field. Dave LaRoche picked up the win despite allowing the Zisk homer and Bob Locker got the save.

Atlanta 12, Montreal 3
Mike Lum drove in five runs on three singles and a homer to lead the rout. Dusty Baker and Hank Aaron also homered for the Braves. Carl Morton allowed one run in 6.2 innings for the win. Mike Torrez took the loss.

Ron Santo drove in Gene Hiser with a two-out single in the bottom of the 16 to end the marathon. Carmen Fanzone hammered a two-run homer in the eighth to give the Cubs a 5-3 lead, but a pair of Chicago errors in the ninth helped the Pirates score two runs on just one hit in the top of the ninth. The Pirates took the lead in the tenth, but Adrian Garrett pinch-hit a homer off Dave Giusti to knot the score again. Mike Paul gets the win, John Lamb the loss. Rick Monday is injured until May 3. The Pirates demote Lamb and activate John Morlan; Lamb is eligible to return on May 9.

St. Louis 3, Houston 0
Alan Foster held the Astros to three hits and Ken Reitz singled home two runs in the eighth to give him some margin for error. The other run came in the first inning when the Cardinals bunched three consecutive singles for Ted Sizemore, Ted Simmons and Joe Torre off loser Don Wilson. Foster walked four and struck out three.

Tom Seaver held the Phillies to three singles and a walk and faced just one man over the minimum to outduel Steve Carlton. Seaver struck out eight and got two double play grounders; another Philly baserunner was nabbed on a busted hit-and-run attempt. Seaver also scored the only run of the game. The Mets had just five hits of their own against Carlton, but three of them came in succession in the sixth, from Seaver, Bud Harrelson and Felix Millan.

Pittsburgh 5, Chicago 4
A sloppy game played in sloppy weather. The Pirates benefited from four Cubs errors and a passed ball; two of their five runs were unearned, and the game-winning rally in the ninth involved two errors and the passed ball. Pittsburgh was charged with two errors and one unearned run. Rick Monday and Manny Sanguillen each drove in two runs. Bob Johnson got the win in relief, and Dave Giusti got the save; Rick Reuschel was tagged with the loss.

Montreal 10, Atlanta 8 (11 innings)
Mike Jorgensen's two-run homer in the top of the 11th capped an impressive comeback by the Expos, who trailed 8-3 going into the ninth. Montreal actually led 3-0 after three innings, but in the fourth Darrell Evans and Dave Johnson hit back-to-back homers for the Braves, who took the lead in the sixth on a two-run single by Johnny Oates. Oates had a third RBI in Atlanta's four-run seventh, which featured a two-run homer by Dusty Baker. Montreal rallied for five runs in the ninth, with Ken Singleton hitting a grand slam off Tom House to tie the game. Mike Marshall threw three innings for the win; Danny Frisella took the loss.

St. Louis 6, Houston 2 (12 innings)
The Cardinals makeshift infield committed four errors -- three of them by "shortstop" Ken Reitz -- but Reggie Cleveland and a host of relievers held the Astros to two unearned runs. Reitz doubled home two runs and scored another in St. Louis' four-run top of the 12th. Ted Sizemore had three RBIs on single and double. Orlando Pena threw two scoreless innings for the win, and Jim Ray took the loss.

Ken Singleton hit a grand slam in the first inning for the Expos, and Felipe Alou added a solo shot in the third inning. Ernie McAnally went six innings without allowing a run, but he allowed three of his six hits in that final inning and departed for a pinch-hitter, with Bill Stoneman and Joe Gilbert finishing the game. George Stone took the loss. Willie Mays went 3-for-4 in the defeat; Ron Hunt had four singles for the Expos.

Pittsburgh 4, Chicago 1
Jim Rooker threw a four-hitter, with Ken Rudolph's homer in the seventh the only run for Chicago. Rooker struck out seven and walked two. Willie Stargell and Manny Sanguillen each hit solo homers for Pittsburgh off Fergie Jenkins, and Al Oliver doubled in two runs off reliever Mike Paul in the eighth.

Houston 12, St. Louis 4
Tommy Helms drove in five runs and Lee May clouted a homer and two doubles as the Astros scored in each of the first seven innings to rout the Cardinals. St. Louis, hampered by injuries that resulted in a makeshift infield, was charged with four errors that resulted in seven unearned runs. Rick Wise took the loss. Ken Forsch got the win. Bob Gibson hit a pinch-hit homer in the eighth off Cecil Upshaw. Mick Kelleher and Joe Torre are both out for Monday's game.

John Milner homered and drove in three runs to power the Mets to the win. Jon Matlack allowed just two unearned runs through seven innings, but Felipe Alou hit a two-run homer in the eighth as the Expos scored three runs to tighten the margin. Harry Parker worked the ninth for the save. Balor Moore took the loss for Montreal.

Atlanta 5, Philadelphia 4
Dusty Baker and Mike Lum each had two-RBI hits in a four-run eighth for the Braves, who then had to survive Greg Luzinski's two-run homer in the top of the ninth. Jim Lonborg allowed just three hits in the first seven innings for the Phillies,  but he didn't retire any of the first three hitters in the eighth, and relievers George Culver and Mac Scarce couldn't strand the runners he left them. Roric Harrison allowed two runs in eight innings and got the win; Tom House got the last two outs for the save.

Pittsburgh 4, Houston 1
Rennie Stinnett homered leading off the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and Manny Sanguillen later singled in two runs. Dock Ellis scattered seven hits in 8.2 innings for the win, and Dave Guisti got the last out for the save. Sanguillen threw out three would-be basestealers, including Cesar Cedeno twice.
