Tuesday's schedule
Pittsburgh (Walker) at Chicago (Hooton)
St. Louis (Foster) at Houston (Wilson)

New York 1, Philadelphia 0
Tom Seaver held the Phillies to three singles and a walk and faced just one man over the minimum to outduel Steve Carlton. Seaver struck out eight and got two double play grounders; another Philly baserunner was nabbed on a busted hit-and-run attempt. Seaver also scored the only run of the game. The Mets had just five hits of their own against Carlton, but three of them came in succession in the sixth, from Seaver, Bud Harrelson and Felix Millan.

Pittsburgh 5, Chicago 4
A sloppy game played in sloppy weather. The Pirates benefited from four Cubs errors and a passed ball; two of their five runs were unearned, and the game-winning rally in the ninth involved two errors and the passed ball. Pittsburgh was charged with two errors and one unearned run. Rick Monday and Manny Sanguillen each drove in two runs. Bob Johnson got the win in relief, and Dave Giusti got the save; Rick Reuschel was tagged with the loss.

Montreal 10, Atlanta 8 (11 innings)
Mike Jorgensen's two-run homer in the top of the 11th capped an impressive comeback by the Expos, who trailed 8-3 going into the ninth. Montreal actually led 3-0 after three innings, but in the fourth Darrell Evans and Dave Johnson hit back-to-back homers for the Braves, who took the lead in the sixth on a two-run single by Johnny Oates. Oates had a third RBI in Atlanta's four-run seventh, which featured a two-run homer by Dusty Baker. Montreal rallied for five runs in the ninth, with Ken Singleton hitting a grand slam off Tom House to tie the game. Mike Marshall threw three innings for the win; Danny Frisella took the loss.

St. Louis 6, Houston 2 (12 innings)
The Cardinals makeshift infield committed four errors -- three of them by "shortstop" Ken Reitz -- but Reggie Cleveland and a host of relievers held the Astros to two unearned runs. Reitz doubled home two runs and scored another in St. Louis' four-run top of the 12th. Ted Sizemore had three RBIs on single and double. Orlando Pena threw two scoreless innings for the win, and Jim Ray took the loss.
