Chicago 7, Pittsburgh 6 (16 innings)
Ron Santo drove in Gene Hiser with a two-out single in the bottom of the 16 to end the marathon. Carmen Fanzone hammered a two-run homer in the eighth to give the Cubs a 5-3 lead, but a pair of Chicago errors in the ninth helped the Pirates score two runs on just one hit in the top of the ninth. The Pirates took the lead in the tenth, but Adrian Garrett pinch-hit a homer off Dave Giusti to knot the score again. Mike Paul gets the win, John Lamb the loss. Rick Monday is injured until May 3. The Pirates demote Lamb and activate John Morlan; Lamb is eligible to return on May 9.
St. Louis 3, Houston 0
Alan Foster held the Astros to three hits and Ken Reitz singled home two runs in the eighth to give him some margin for error. The other run came in the first inning when the Cardinals bunched three consecutive singles for Ted Sizemore, Ted Simmons and Joe Torre off loser Don Wilson. Foster walked four and struck out three.
