For six batters, Smokey Joe Williams was ineffective.

For the next 27, he was superb.

The Hilldale righty fave up two run in the first inning on a homer by Ted Williams, but fired a complete-game win, fanning 10 Ikes and allowing just four hits.

Buck Leonard hit a three-run shot off Early Wynn in the third — a rally started with two outs when Duke Snider dropped Cristobal Torriente's fly ball in right field.

In the finale, the Ikes opened a three-run lead on Nip Winters only to see that vanish in the seventh, when Hilldale put together a three-run rally against Robin Roberts for a 4-3 lead.

But Eggie Hensley gave up a tying homer to Eddie Mathews in the eighth, and in the 10th the Ikes racked Dizzy Dismukes for a double, triple and homer (by Roy Campanella) in succession to make a winner of Jim Bunning, who had two hitless innings of relief.
