The Dodgers slugged 14 homers to take a surprisingly long series from the Padres.

The opener in Dodger Stadium was the first sign that this would not be the cakewalk one might expect. Bill Greif allowed four singles in seven innings, and Mike Corkins and Mike Caldwell combined for two more scoreless frames for the visitors. The Padres scored an unearned run in the top of the first of Clayton Kershaw, and it stood up. Enrique Hernandez was injured early in this game and did not appear in the rest of the series.

JustinTurner hit three homers and a double in Game Two and drove in nine runs -- as it turned out, his only RBIs of the series -- to lead the rout. San Diego stater Clay Kirby didn't retire a man in the third innings, and Gary Ross, the first man out of the bullpen, wasn't much better. Every Dodger starter scored at least one run; Max Muncy scored four.

The series moved to 1973 and Jack Murphy Stadium, and Hyun-Jin Ryu won a pitchers duel over Steve Arlin. Ryu and Arlin each allowed four hits in eight innings, and each allowed a solo homer. But the Dodgers pieced together a run on a walk, a single and a ground out in the first inning.

The Padres evened the series behind Randy Jones' complete game; he allowed three hits, one of them a two-run homer by Chris Taylor. Cito Gaston hit a two-run triple in the Padres' three-run fourth inning against Kenta Maeda.

The Dodgers took Game Five in another blowout. Corey Seager hit two homers and drove in five runs; Cory Bellinger and Joc Pederson each drove in two. Kershaw allowed two solo homers in 5.1 innings, and Ross Stripling went 3.2 innings for the long save.

The Padres took another close one in Game Six as the series returned to Dodger Stadium. Walker Buehler held a 4-1 lead going into the seventh, but pinch-hitter Gene Locklear led off with a single and scored on Johnny Grubb's double. The Dodgers pulled Buehler for Pedro Baez. Dave Roberts singled, Nate Colbert walked to load the bases and Jerry Morales hit a grand slam to put the Padres ahead for good.

The Padres skipped Game Three starter Steve Arlin and started Game Seven with Caldwell. The lefty gave up a pair of homers to Muncy, a solo shot in the fifth that tied the game at 2 and two-run homer in the seventh that gave Los Angeles the lead for good. Ryu went seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits; Joe Kelly worked a scoreless eighth and Kenley Jansen a perfect ninth to secure the win and the series.

Player availability: Hernandez (injury) and Stripling (long relief outing) will both be available for the opener of the second round

Projected rotation: Kershaw-Maeda-Buehler-Ryu-(Kershaw)-(Maeda)-(Ryu)
