Cesar Cedeno homered, tripled and doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair for Long Prairie, while Tom Seaver struck out nine while scattering seven hits in his complete game. Carl Yastzremski walked four times against losing pitcher Mickey Welch.

Bertha made the most of their three hits, combining two of them with a walk, a hit batter and a Roberto Clemente error for three runs in the first inning. Tom Williams made those tallies work, allowing six hits in 8.2 innings. He walked four and struck out one. Jose Mendez entered with the bases loaded and two out to retire Johnny Bench to end it. Denny McLain worked all nine innings for the loss.
