Jesse Burkett, Ed Delahanty and Cap Anson each had three hits as the Novelists snapped Bertha's winning streak at seven. Burkett scored twice and both Delahanty and Anson had two RBIs. Old Hoss Radbourn allowed 10 hits in his complete game win; he walked none and struck out three.

Bobby Bonds hit a two-run homer in the second inning to put Long Prairie ahead, and Darrell Evans hammered a three-run homer in the third. Tom Seaver stuck out four men without a walk in his eight-hit complete game.
