Reggie Jackson hammered a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth to reverse a one-run deficit, and John Hiller got the final five outs in relief of Bert Blyleven. Joe Morgan and Bobby Bonds each hit solo homers off loser Kid Nichols. Blyleven yielded 12 hits in 7.1 innings, including five for extra bases, but limited the damage to three runs. .
Novelists 17, Apollos 1
Orator O'Rourke's big stick spoke loudly in the first inning; the Browerville catcher capped a six-run inning with a grand slam off Sam McDowell. The Novelists continued to hit all game; they went scoreless in only two of their eight at-bats, and had a second six-run ining highlighted by a bases-loaded triple by Billy Hamilton. Browerville had 17 hits off six Hewitt hurlers..Tim Keefe granted one run on five hits for the win.
