Carl Yastzremski drove in the tying run with a single in the seventh inning and Ted Simmons put Long Prairie ahead with a sac fly later in the inning as Clarissa dropped into a tie for first place. Tom Seaver allowed one earned run in eight innings, scattering nine hits, for the win, and John Hiller worked a perfect ninth for the save. Amos Rusie allowed three runs on five hits in his first start..

Browerville knocked Bob Gibson out of the box with a five-run second inning that featured a pair of doubles, two walks and three singles. Cap Anson hit a two-run homer in the fourth off John Gelnar, who gave up three unearned runs. Winner Mickey Welch surrendered a three-run homer to Jim Wynn but retired the final 12 men he faced and ended up with a seven-hitter..
