Tom Williams surrendered a three-run homer in the first to Willie McCovey but then shut out the Apollos on two hits through the eighth. Louis Santop drove in two runs, and Pete Hill and Candy Jim Taylor each scored a pair of runs, with the go-ahead run scoring on a Bob Gibson wild pitch, Jose Mendez worked a perfect ninth for the save.. .

Novelists 11, Agnews 6
Browerville garnered 13 hits and seven walks off four Long Prairie pitchers, producing enough runs for Mickey Welch to go the distance despite allowing six runs. The Novelists also benefited from three errors, which led to three unearned runs off loser Nolan Ryan. Ed Delahanty and Cap Anson each drove in three runs for the victors, while Bid McPhee and Billy Hamilton each scored three times. Willie Stargell hit a three-run homer for the losers.
