The Guilford Quakers moved into first place with the series win.
The Quakers belabored Rube Currie for two runs in the first inning and three more in the second, with Max Carey and Hank Greenberg each homering in the second. The Black Caps got one back in the third before Spoony Palm hit a three-run homer off Tony Kaufmann in the the fourth. Johnny Evers squeezed a run home in a two-run sixth as the Quakers opened a 7-4 lead, but Art Pennington hit a three-run shot in the eighth to tie it. The game went into extra innings, and in the top of the 10th the Black Caps got to George Milstead and Guy Bush for two walks, two singles and two doubles, good for five runs. Bill Holland threw four scoreless innings of relief for the victory.
The Black Caps gave Bill Drake a 2-1 lead after four innings, but in the bottom of the fifth errors by Bill Perkins and Alec Radcliff helped fuel a four-run inning highlighted by a two-out, two-run home by Tony Perez. Ted Lyons scattered seven hits in eight innings.
Red Faber was even better than Lyons in the finale, allowing just one run (a ninth-inning homer by Bonnie Serrell) on eight hits.He induced four double-play grounders in the complete game and was back by three two-run homers, from Joe Tinker, Greenberg and Larry Doby.
Pitcher availability: For the Black Caps, Williams should sit one game, Holland and Currie at least one, Drake at least two and Cockrell at least three. Add a game before allowing any of those five or Mathis to start. The Quakers bullpen is fully rested.
Projected starters: Quakers: Jacobs (or Keen)-Aldridge-Lyons-Faber-Kaufmann. Black Caps: Streeter-Smith (or Mathis or Williams)-Williams (or Mathis or Holland),
