The Flashes are eliminated, and the Quakers clinch the pennant.

Hugh McQuillan and Claude Jonnard kept the Flashes slender pennant hopes alive with a strong game in the opener. The Orioles scored single runs in the first two innings, but after that McQuillan allowed just two hits in five innings, and Jonnard finished with two innings of one-hit shutout relief. Jim Bottomley was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a home run for the Flashes.

Dave McNally held Fordham to one run in eight innings, that a homer by George Kelly in the fifth. The Orioles tagged Virgil Barnes for five runs in the first three innings, with Frank Robinson driving in three runs with a pair of doubles. Robinson added a fourth RBI with a groundout in a three-run eighth. Boog Powell also had three RBIs for Baltimore, and Mark Belanger went 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a steal.

The rubber game went to the Orioles. The Flashes scored twice off Jim Hardin in the first inning on four singles and a hit batter, but errors by Lindstrom and Joe Medwick resulted in unearned runs for Baltimore in the third and fourth innings to even the score, and Boog Powell put Baltimore in front to stay with a two-run homer off Burleigh Grimes in the fifth. The Orioles tagged Wayland Dean for seven runs in the seventh. Hardin went eight innings, allowing four runs on nine hits.

Pitcher availability: For the Flashes, Rosy Ryan should sit a game. Dean worked 1.1 long innings in the finale, and Jonnard pitched one inning. Bentley should pitch no more than one inning in their next games. For the Orioles, Lopez pitched one inning in the finale.

Projected starters: Flashes -- Haines-Nehf-McQuillan to close the season. Orioles: Phoebus-Cuellar to close the season.
