Dizzy Dismukes carried a 3-1 lead into the top of the ninth and retired the first Clarissa batter, but then the Crimsons struck for five straight hits, including a pair of doubles, good for four runs. John Donaldson relieved after the first two hits and took the loss without retiring a batter. Roger Conner had three RBIs for the contest. Kid Nichols relieved winner Pud Galvin with two on and two out in the ninth and retired Bill Monroe for the save.

Novelists 2, Agnews 0

Old Hoss Radbourn spun a six-hit shutout with six strikeouts, and Hughie Jennings bunted home Ed Delahanty on a suicide squeeze in the sixth inning. The Novelists failed on another squeeze attempt in that inning, with Sam Thompson hung out to dry after Jimmy Collins failed to get the bunt down, but Jim O'Rourke took second on the play and scored when Collins followed with a base hit. Lose Tom Seaver allowed seven hits in his eight inning complete game. The Novelists moved into first place.
