Pud Galvin, a surprise starter for Clarissa, threw a three- hit shutout and didn;t allow a hit after the third inning. Joe Kelley went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, and Dan Brouthers and George Davis each drove in a pair. The Crimsons peppered three Agnews hurlers for 16 hits..

Sam Thompson drove in five runs, three on a sixth-inning homer, and Cap Anson scored three times to back John Clarkson's four-hitter.  Willie McCovey hammered his 13th homer for the Apollos..
