Willie McCovey hammered two of Hewitt's six homers as the Apollos outslugged the Long Prairie Agnews. Five of the six long balls were solo shots, all coming off losing pitcher Nolan Ryan. Willie Stargell hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth off Dick Bosman to make the score close. .
Novelists 3, Fishermen 2 (10 innings)
Ed Delahanty scored the game's first run in the second inning, drove in another with a sac fly in the third, preserved a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth by throwing out Home Run Johnson at the plate, then doubled home the eventual winning run in the 10th. Mickey Welch allowed nine hits in nine innings for the win, with John Clarkson working a perfect 10th for the save.
