Cesar Cedeno muffed a fly ball in the top of the 16th to trigger a three-run inning, and the Apollos hung on despite five walks in the bottom of the inning by closer Ken Tatum. Darrell Evans gave the Agnews a 2-0 lead in the second with a homer off Bob Gibson, but Willie McCovey tied it with a homer in the sixth. Gibson and opposing starter Gaylord Perry each went nine innings. Wilbur Wood took the loss in his fourth inning of relief. Dan McGinn, who worked 2.1 innings, was the winner.
