Pittsburgh 6, Chicago 3: Richie Zisk's three-run homer broke a 3-3 deadlock and propelled the Pirates to the win in the first game of a doubleheader. The Cubs were eliminated from contention with the loss, making the Houston Astros league champs. Nelson Briles went eight innings for the win, with Dave Giusti working a perfect ninth for the save. Milt Pappas took the loss.
Pittsburgh 9, Chicago 2: Manny Sanguillen homered twice and Willie Stargell and Richie Hebner hit back-to-back four-baggers as the Pirates reached the .500 mark. Bruce Kison went seven innings for the win, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. The Cubs have lost Jose Cardenal, Glenn Beckert and Gene Hiser for what remains of the season, and Jim Hickman is also out for Friday's game. Ben Oglivie has been activated from the taxi squad to play right Friday; Ed Crosby is also on the Cubs bench for the rest of the season but will not play unless a middle infielder is injured.
