New York 2, Pittsburgh 1: Jon Matlack struck out 13 in his complete game and Rusty Staub singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Staub's hit came off reliever Luke Walker, but it was starter Dock Ellis who took the loss for the Pirates.
St. Louis 10, Philadelphia 6: Bernie Carbo drove in four runs and scored three times as the Cardinals outslugged the Phillies. Bob Gibson allowed six runs in seven innings to pick up the win. Del Unser homered twice for the Phillies. Joe Torre had three hits plus a walk and a hit batter for St. Louis, and Tommy Agee homered. Wayne Twitchell was the losing pitcher.
