Sudden Sam McDowell and Amos Rusie turned a slugfest into a pitchers duel. The two fireballers combined for 12 innings of one-run, two-hit relief. Cy Young got only six outs before giving way to Rusie. Bob Gibson was pulled after allowing a leadoff single in the eighth. Willie McCovey, who bounced into three double plays in his first four at-bats, ended the contest with a two-run homer off Candy Cummings.

Apollos: Gibson may not start until Day 5. McDowell may work Day 5 with penaltiy, Day 6 without penalty. Projected starters: McLain starts Day 2, off Day 3, Jenkins Day 4, Gibson Day 5.
